Getting ready for Spring.....

By TheWiZ - Posted on 03 February 2009

Now is the time to research and order your fertilizers, ammendments, and equipment you'll be needing for your 2009 growing season.

Every year I sit down and write down three things that I am going to do to get me past my personal best towards setting a new Colorado Record......What three things can I do,,, that will have the greatest overall affect on my growing year potential.....

This year

I. Growing Pattern Improvement, Going to use the modified spider....

II. Foliar and Fertigation, Organic all the way, better dispersion and more consistent application.

III. Keep weeds under control. Gett'em while they are small.

Last Year my BIG Three where,

I. Hoop Houses (Gettem out earlier)

II. Automate the water system. (Work smarter not harder)

III. Better Vine Management. (Keep up with it)

I figured each one, if done correctly, would gain me 100 lbs. towards my personal best.

Figure out where you need to improve the most. Take your time and Pick your biggest three that will make the most difference for your patch situation. Automated watering was a biggy for me and should be on the top of your list too.

Gather your supplies now, fish and seaweed, 4" 5" peat pots, get that Drip works catalog, complete your design. Write down your questions for researching. Remember what Ole PapZ sayZ......The harder one workZ....The luckier one getZ....

Wake up those sleeping microbes in your soil.

With the fantastic early Spring weather we have been having, we just finished spraying "wake up juice" on our patches.

WiZ's Magic Wake Up Formula consists of:

2 Oz Fish
2 Oz Seaweed Extract
2 Oz UnSulphured Molasses
1 TBS Water Soluable Humic Acid

Per Gallon of water

Mix it up well and "Spray IT to the dirt" in your patch. This will provide a wake up to those sleeping hungry microbes in your garden soil. Application can be with 2- gallon sprayer and I sprayed to the dirt just so it starts to soak in. You should water after that so it soaks to an inch into the soil.

Stop by your local StarBucks and ask them for their spent grounds for your gardens. Its great source of free organics, your pumpkins and veggies will love it. Spread this around your garden as a food source for those waking dirt criters that help us GROW'Zem BIG.

It wont be long now before we cover our patch areas with Plastic to help warm up the soil. This really does help increase the soil tempetures if you are trying to get a head start into your garden season. Use clear plastic instead of Black Plastic. We dont want to BAKE our microbes.....just warm them.

The first of March is around the corner Spring Fever is in the air. Whether or not you are growing an Atlantic Giant Pumpkin this year, a big vegetable garden, or just a few odd veggies to augment the dinner table, those winterery days of dreamin about our 2009 gardens are almost gone
And those growing dreams...... about to become reality.

For PumpKaNators, one should be ordering all of your ammendments and supplies. Liquid Fish, Seaweed, Organic Fertilzers, Peat Pots and other gardening supplies should all now be on your radar screens. You dont want to wait till the last minute since suppliers may run out due to the Spring rush.

There are many great suppliers out there. One of my favorites is Peacefull Valley - www.GrowOrganic.com
they have a great variety of gardening supplies with some fantastic pricing to go along with it. If you let them know you are a member of the "Rocky Mountian Giant Vegetable Growers" they should apply a club discount to your purchase.

I use several suppliers to fill my ammendment needs. Neptune Harvest is a great site to order your fish and seaweed from, they have excellent products and great shipping prices, you can't beat their seaweed and growing products.
