501 Kane 07

By Ron H - Posted on 28 June 2009

Here is my lineup for this year:

1432 Carlson-Petersen 04 (1097.5 Beachy 02 x self)
1180.2 Krug 07 (1432 Carlson-Petersen 04 x 998.6 Pukos 05)
501 Kane 07 (998.6 Pukos 05 x 991 Urena 05)
344 Hoffman 05 (1432 Carlson-Petersen 04 x 898 Knauss 01)

I had planned on growing the 1231 Pukos, but it got chewed off by an underground insect before it emerged from the soil after it had germinated.........so the 501 Kane gets the nod. It is a Colorado seed, so I think I'll plan to track it here on this blog. Below is a pic of the 501 plant taken June 27 with the main approaching 5 ft.

Later in the day the "wal-o-water windbreaks" were taken down and trenches were dug ahead of the emerging 2ndaries.

Now the 751 Hoffman 09 (501 Kane 07 x 1432 Carlson-Petersen 04)
The 751 was a sound fruit weighed as Exibition.

Still putting on about 10 lb a day as of a couple days ago....can't beat that for this time of year. We usually get our first frost about the middle of Sept. My grand daughter Dawn is posing in this pic.

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, I do plan to bring it. Now that there is a pic of it here, I guess it's too late to start sandbaging on the color....LOL

See ya there!!

Ron....I sure hope to see you at Jareds this year with that nice orange pumpkin.....Need someone to give Ole BiZ a run at the Howard Dill Award......YourZ sure looks nice.....

Here's a shot of some of the hail damage from 3 days ago. It sure could have been a lot worse. The older leaves seemed to be much less affected than the young ones.

Patch got a heavy dose of marble sized hail. Took out 50% to 75% of leaf surface, but at least there is some leaf surface left to work with. Had blankets on pumpkins so they weren't damaged.

Day 21 56cc 37ss 39ee 132ott

My pumpkins are well behind ave growth for me this year. The earlier hail, cool temps, and a work schedule which didn't allow me to keep up with the plants in July all contributed. Anyway, this 501 fruit looks like it will end up with some nice color.
Image

The plant has come back nicely from the hail, although there was some minor damage to the main which could limit peak pumpkin growth. I was able to get some 2ndaries to grow out past the damage, so hopefully that will help.

This is an 8 day old fruit with a 17 in circ 10 ft out on the main.

Well, I guess it was my turn to get a hail storm. It's been 6 years since I've got hit with damaging hail....I'm growing a Colorado seed....hmmmmm. lol Anyway, things could have been much worse. The hail was the size of over ripe peas and had the ground looking white for a little while. I was able to go out ahead of the storm and at least cover up the main tips, so they are in pretty good shape. I haven't done a close inspection yet, but I don't think the damage on the exposed vine is too bad. Here's the 501 Kane with with an 8 ft main.
